Pianist Benjamin Chapman currently studies and resides in Canada. He is one of a growing number within the emerging generation of Australian musicians seeking to further and develop their abilities through the experience of overseas study. Since moving to Canada he has actively pursued many performance opportunities. His achievements to date have included winning 1st prize at the Guelph Symphony Concerto competition with his rendition of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and two recitals with the Canadian Opera Company.
Recent performances include appearances at the 2009 Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition and Festival in Brisbane, as one of twenty pianists selected from Australia and New Zealand and at a recent performance with “Midday Music with Shigeru”, as part of the Barrie Colours of Music festival in Barrie, Ontario. Benjamin’s other performances in Ontario in 2009 included two fundraising concerts for the Stratford Summer Music Festival which is run in association with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
In October of 2008 Benjamin made his Canadian orchestral debut with the Saint-Saens Concerto in G minor with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra at the River Run Centre in Guelph, Ontario. Also in 2008 Mr Chapman was chosen to perform two recitals on the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre noon hour piano series run by the Canadian Opera Company, the second recital was part of the series’ Prokofiev Sonata cycle project, Benjamin worked alongside seven other pianists to perform all of the Prokofiev sonatas for piano in recitals throughout the season.
Benjamin has also excelled in his studies; in 2009 he was awarded the University Medal for Music by the University of New South Wales in recognition of his work during his degree there. Other prizes and scholarships from his time at the University of New South Wales include the Sydney Symphony prize, the University of New South Wales Honours Scholarship and Benjamin was also the inaugural recipient of the Dean of Arts Music scholarship for performers. Benjamin has appeared with the University of New South Wales Orchestra and Collegium Musicum.
Upon graduating with 1st class honors from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, he moved to Toronto in 2007 and was awarded a full scholarship to complete an Artist Diploma at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory with Professor John Perry. He is currently a candidate for the Maîtrise de Musique Interprétation at l’Université de Montréal in the studio of Professor Marc Durand.
